Q: Does GEO represent all graduate student employees?

A: Yes. GEO represents all graduate Teaching Assistants and Fellows, Research Assistants, and Administrative Assistants at the UMass Boston campus.

Q: What are Union dues?

A: GEO members pay Union dues to cover our costs of administration and representation. Graduate employees who pay dues are eligible to vote in elections, ratify contracts, and serve on the GEO Committee.

Q: Why am I being asked to waive my FERPA rights?

A: As student employees, we have a dual role at the University. Employment information is available to all of the other unions on campus. However, the University uses FERPA as a way to classify us as students and deny us access to employment information. By waiving your FERPA rights, GEO gains access to your employment information, which is very beneficial to us when we are negotiating our contract. GEO will never receive any of your confidential educational records.

Q: How do I file a grievance or what do I do if I need help resolving a dispute?

A: Contact GEO and someone will be available to help you file a grievance or help with dispute resolution.
